I'm pretty lucky. I mean - dead, but lucky.

What's your dad like?

When I was ten years old, he abandoned me at a boarding school immediately after my mother died, and left to go start a new family. I never saw him again. I don't know what he's like now but I know what he was like then and it doesn't speak promisingly for the present version.

I'm sorry. You shouldn't have to be without your family like that.

He wasn't my family anymore. So it didn't matter.

Also it was twenty years ago so the hurt and the anger bottled up inside had plenty of time to lessen.

It never quite goes away, though, does it.

Twenty years later and I still wouldn't forgive him if he asked.

Do you still miss your mom?

[deadly_ned]

Yes. I don't think that stops either.

It was just her birthday. Just before I got here. The first birthday since she died.

I know that's a thing people say when someone dies, but I am. Sorry.

What do you do to remember her?

We used to do crafts and things together. She did scrapbooking. So I used to look at those, when I could.

Do you scrapbook with your father?

[versusnurture]

No. We hunt, and he was showing me how to cook.

[deadly_ned]

He doesn't strike me as much of the hunting type. Your father.

Do you always make assumptions about people?

[deadly_ned]

I try to make guesses. It's, um. I was a homicide...investigator.

Part time.

Oh, I used to know someone who did that. He was a friend.

It's not a common line of work.

[versusnurture]

No. But he was good at it.

What was he like?

He was tired. Stressed. He saw a lot of really bad things.
